June 12- 13, 2010 - all weekend
Independent artists in addition to those from the Mid-Atlantic Plein-Air Society will converge once more on Millville’s Glasstown Arts District to take part in this year’s Glasstown Plein Air Competition, during the weekend of June 12- 13. Local artists of note will judge the results.
Winning works on paper or canvas will be put on exhibit at the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, 22 North High Street in Millville. The exhibition will be open to the public.
Over thirty artists have participated in previous years, affording Arts District visitors the pleasure of watching work develop in a variety of media on easels placed throughout the downtown and on the Maurice River waterfront.
Deriving from the French phrase en plein air meaning “in the open air,” the technique originated during the Impressionist period when artists began to paint outdoors instead of inside their studios.
Plein-air artists over age 18 can pre-register in 2010 - date to be announced - by contacting the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts on 1-856- 327-4500 or toll free on 800-887-4957. Each participant is limited to no more than two compositions and blank surfaces must be presented on the morning of the competition for stamping. A registration fee will apply.
The Glasstown Plein-Air Competition is sponsored by the Urban Enterprise Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and Discover Jersey Arts.
